“Oh, you’re an actor? Where do you act?”
If you’re an actor (and I use the term to define any performer), you’ve probably heard this before. Let’s clear up some misconceptions.
Actors don’t act in one specific place. We act wherever someone wants us. In the professional world, we’re typically hired on a contractual basis. Let’s say I was auditioning for a production of Phantom of the Opera in the Majestic Theater. If I were to get the part, I would be given say, a six month contract, and I would perform in the show there almost every night for six months. At the end of those six months, hopefully my contract would get renewed and I could continue to perform there. If not, I would have to move on and audition for something else. Perhaps I would audition for the Phantom of the Opera national tour, or the West End production, or I might audition for another show entirely. A new show means a new theater.
If you’re doing theater on the side, as a hobby, you might audition for shows at community theaters. If you’re in high school, you might do shows at your school or for different summer camps. These experiences are more likely to consist of a few months of after school/night time rehearsals and very few actual shows. Then, you move on. Another show, another theater.
Both in the professional world and in the amateur realm, you might find a theater company that puts on a season of shows. To put it simply, a group of actors that puts on, say, eight shows a year, using the same people for every show. If you really fall in love with a company and if they fall in love with you, you might end up working with them for years and years. If you only act with that company and the company only uses that one specific theater, that’s really the only time you can say, “Oh, I act at _______.” But most actors, even if they are in that sort of comfortable situation, act outside of their companies or the theaters they’re contracted at. They make appearances at 54 Below or even piano bars like Don’t Tell Mama. It’s not a job for them, it’s a lifestyle. They want to act or sing or dance as much as possible. They don’t act in just one place.
